Last Litter Program
AWARE NH’s Last Litter Program helps prevent future unplanned litters while supporting pet owners who want to do the right thing for their animals. Unplanned litters can happen, and when they do, this program ensures that it truly is the last one—helping protect parent pets, placing their babies responsibly, and reducing pet overpopulation in our community.
How the Program Works
1) Kittens or puppies are surrendered to AWARE NH at 8 weeks of age. At that time, AWARE NH assumes full responsibility for their care. This includes veterinary exams, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and adoption into carefully screened, loving homes.
2) The mother is spayed at no cost to the owner. Once the litter has been safely weaned, the mother receives a FREE spay surgery through AWARE NH and is then returned to her owner, ensuring she will not have any future litters.
3) Everyone benefits. The babies are placed responsibly, the mother returns home healthier, and future unwanted litters are prevented—helping reduce the strain on shelters and rescue organizations.
Why This Program Matters
Unplanned litters are one of the leading contributors to pet overpopulation. By stepping in at this critical moment, the Last Litter Program helps to:
- Reduce the number of animals entering shelters
- Support families who may not have access to affordable spay/neuter services
- Ensure healthier futures for both parent pets and their offspring
- Prevent repeat litters that place pets at risk
This program focuses on prevention, compassion, and long term solutions that benefit both animals and the people who love them.
